Yazdani, Ali (Illinois, USA):Mapping the 1D electronic states of nanoscopic peapods
4K UHV STM with surface science tools
- Sample stays in for 2-3 months. 0.001 A RMS
5-7-7-5 defect seen at 1.25V 100 pA. Same image as calculated by Orlikowsky PRB 2000
Peapod Science paper. Modulation in line cut along the peapod is seen only in one polarity. Clear enhancement of unoccupied DOS. All CNTs identified as peapods are semiconductors. CNT DOS is modified by the C60s. New hybrid band occurs
- Estimated bandwith of C60 chain is 0.1V. This does not explain the images. Expl: SWNT modifies the C60 el. str.
- Effect of tip height variation can be removed by normalizing dI/dV by I/V
- Manipulation: move the C60 inside the SWNT.
- These peapods have been sonicated for many hours.
